Mr Humpherson also dismissed safety concerns raised by the Australian Greens.

“We think the safest solution for this reactor is for it to be shut down and for the waste to be contained properly,” Greens federal senator Scott Ludlam said.

Mr Humpherson said the problem posed no threat to the community or staff.

“On the scale of things it is an irritation and a inconvenience,” he said.

“It’s causing a reduced efficiency for the reactor’s operation, but there are no safety issue.”

ANSTO will continue to import nuclear medicines until early next year, when the commissioning process and safety checks by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) are completed.

“We are still importing because we haven’t completed commissioning of one of the major radio-pharmaceuticals,” Mr Humpherson said.

“To do that the safety regulator separately has to approve testing of irradiation then the various processes in the manufacture.
